CATHEDRAL will release the long-thought-to-lost "Society's Pact with Satan" on October 3rd via Rise Above Records. The track was originally recorded in 2012 and was considered to be lost until producer Jaime Gomez Arellano stumbled across it when looking through old studio recordings. It was an evening of heavy metal at the Majestic Ventura Theater not to be soon forgotten. With the mighty DARK ANGEL returning to the stage after far too long, The Extinction Level Event tour was loaded with incredible performances and walls of killer music. First up, VOID took the stage, delivering their brand of straight-forward thrash and getting the early audience into the mood for some rock'n'roll. Veterans HIRAX next took the stage, with legendary frontman Katon W. De Pena whipping the still-growing audience into a frenzy. This man knows how to control a stage and the band is furiously entertaining and talented. Said the guy sitting next to me, "HIRAX is one of the greatest bands of all time! Even better than METALLICA." No faint praise, but I'll let you decide after you see this show. The legendary SACRED REICH delivered a raging performance, the highpoint of which was their biggest hit, "Surf Nicaragua," which swirled into one of the evening's most energetic circle pits. Finally, DARK ANGEL took the stage, shaking the walls of the Ventura Theater with their crushing sound and fury, performing some of their greatest hits and several tracks from their new album, "Extinction Level Event," released just the day before. This band has gone through more than its share of line-up changes (and losses) over the years but you'd never know it from the energy on stage and, any chance to catch Gene Hoglan beat the crap out of those drums is worth every second. At this point, I am confident to say that we have laid down a new—and importantly, stable—foundation for the future of the band. There are a couple of things about Arpie that I believe work in our favor in the long run. First of all, he has pretty much the same musical roots as the rest of the band and I have. Musically, a perfect match, you could say. He is from a similar background and region, which makes both the relationship and logistics easier. It already feels like I have known him for a long time. Whenever Tanya visited Finland, we’d demo a little something. However, during 2024, our enthusiasm grew, and songs began to emerge rapidly. There was also a lot of material stored away in the drawers. At times, it felt like maybe even too much. For every recording session, there was something new and exciting to discover, and at the same time, even grander things would be created. In other words, we’ve never had a shortage of material, quite the opposite. The only thing in short supply has been time. But now, Soulgrind has been given its place on the timeline once again. For the album 'Ad Pulchram Mortem,' we made 12 tracks. Of these, we chose "Jylhä metsämies" as the single. "Jylhä metsämies" is the story of a man who walks his own path, bowing to nothing not above, not below, not on this earth. The lyrics reflect Soulgrind very well itself. The music is very self-directed and copies no one or anything. This has always been the case and will remain so. The band sounds like itself. Musically, "Jylhä metsämies" covers the band's journey from Whitsongs, through Kalma/Pakana, to The Tuoni Pathway, while also bringing in much that is new. All in all, in our opinion, it's a brilliant way to open a new chapter. The album itself contains much more, with even some surprising material. During the remainder of the year, we aim to finish up the Ad Pulchram Mortem album and release it, and of course, the desire to play live is strong. Doom metallers WIZARDS OF HAZARDS has released a video for their track, "Too Late." Says the band: "It all started with a riff — originally played in reverse. But in Ville’s head, it kept flipping around. When we finally tried it the other way, everything suddenly made sense. The groove locked in, the energy clicked, and the song found its true shape. The drums were recorded in full takes, capturing the raw feel of a live performance — we picked the best take, the one that had just the right momentum. Amir brought his signature laid-back style to the bass, composing much of the line on the spot in the studio, letting instinct lead the way. Vocally, Ville and producer Sam nailed an intense drive that powers the whole track. Originally, the verses felt a bit cramped — until a breakthrough moment where the final line was lifted to the top of the next section. Suddenly, the lyrics had room to breathe, and the phrasing came alive. And the final touch?
