... KISS killed it at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on November 3rd. The band was in fine form, especially Paul Stanley, as they performed some of their biggest hits among bombs, columns of fire, a full fireworks show and pure rock'n'roll circus. The sold-out crowd was on their feet from beginning to end, pumping their fists, singing along with the lyrics and ooh-ing and ahh-ing at all the mind-blowing special effects, including Paul on a zipline and Gene Simmons spitting fire and blood. … POWERMAN 5000 started their US tour right here in Ventura, California and, of course, R. Scott Bolton and I were in attendance. The show started out with a band called UNCURED, a rock/progressive/technical death metal band (whatever the hell that is). Their musical style was fast, loud, tight, and fast again. The energy they put out was most impressive. I was listening to the band, and I was amazed at their furious approach to music. At one point, one of the guitarists blindfolded himself and proceeded to play a three-minute solo. Never saw that before! Up next was JULIEN-K, a electronic rock band out of Long Beach, California featuring former members of ORGY. It was an interesting display of metal prowess. No live bass player and, sometimes, one of the guitarists played an iPad. Something else I’ve never seen before (except maybe in old videos from the 80s). Not really my cup of tea, but interesting none the less. The drummer was very impressive. His bass drums were electrified and very loud. He used his bass drum as the electric bass for the band. Very different but also very cool! Powerman 5000 finally took the stage and announced that this was the first stop on their current tour. Although the Ventura Music Hall was not filled to capacity, the people there were most appreciative. Spider (Rob Zombie’s younger brother) sounded great, and the band is filled with high-energy, super-talented musicians. They played all the big PM5K hits and some lesser-known stuff as well. I can tell you this, everyone there had a great time with some great rock’n’roll, three dynamic performances and our share of adult beverages. All in all, a very good time. One funny anecdote: As we approached the venue, an apparently slightly inebriated female started lit up, and yelled out “Old Dudes! Old dudes rule!” Lol. Well, of course, she winds up sitting right in front of us during the show and we heard “old rock dudes” at least four more times. Also, I proceeded to get a sloppy, unsolicited hug. Luckily, I was not the only one to get her attention. And she was having a blast! Good venue, great company, abundant drinks and killer line-up of great music. Catch PM5K on the road if you can. Per a statement released on social media, Ozzy said: “My one and only purpose during this time has been to get back on stage. My singing voice is fine.
