Kevin Steele, lead singer and frontman of Roxx Gang and The Mojo Gurus, has recorded his first solo album, "One Thing Left To Do." It's a solid rock'n'roll album, with hints of country, punk and other bits mixed within. The songs are songs; they're written with style, they tell stories, and they draw you in like an emotional magnet.
This feels like a very personal album for Steele. He sings the lyrics with real feeling and raw emotion. The songs are varied and unique, and Steele makes his voice fit each song like the proverbial glove. Compare the hard rocker "One Thing Left to Do" and "Sad Sad Song" to get a very clear picture of the important variances. Some of the songs sound vintage and, by that, I mean they're a little boogie-woogie at times, sound like classic 50s tunes at times, and tracks like "The 9 Lives Blues," have ... well, yes, a bluesy tinge to them. This track, with its badass vintage throb and sometimes spoken word vocals, made me think of Cab Calloway! (And that's not a bad thing). And, if you didn't know better, you'd think that "Fingers Crossed" came off a country album you found in your grandparents' garage.
It's fun to explore all these genres and sounds with Steele as the album plays through. They're authentic, for sure, but Steele still manages to put his mark on them. In other words, they're original tunes written and recorded in vintage styles and irresistible as hell.
Those looking for go on a personal musical journey with Kevin Steele will find "One Thing Left to Do" as fascinating and as listenable as I did.
