RAVAGED BY THE YETI

"Snowbound Horror" (Testimony Records; 2026)

Sometimes, just the name of a band can get you a review here on RoughEdge.com. We get dozens of submissions today, and have a very limited staff, so sometimes it takes a poke in the eye to get our attention. Ravaged by the Yeti and their album "Snowbound Horror" managed to do exactly that.

Fortunately, Ravaged by the Yeti's "Snowbound Horror" is also pretty damn good. As I said, it make take a poke in the eye to get our attention, but that doesn't guarantee you a good review. The eleven grindish/death metal tracks on "Snowbound Horror," however, took care of that.

A virtual tsunami of sound, "Snowbound Horror" starts kicking your ass from the very first note. The guitars and bass power-hammer your ear drums, the vocals are pure (dare I say it?) Yeti howls, and the rhythms swirl around you in a fury, like a car crusher squeezing old Cadillacs into metal bricks.

The downside is that the song titles get a little tedious at times, digging into the Yeti theme and clamping down on it just a bit too tightly. When you have a band called Ravaged by the Yeti, an album named "Snowbound Horror," and song titles like "Vengeance in Fur," "As Fangs Go Deep," "Frozen Stiff" and "Death by Icicle" the weight of the theme tends to pin you to the (snow-covered) ground. I mean, I get it, this whole thing could be a concept album, like a novel telling the story of a ravaging yeti with the songs acting as chapters of the book. But it got a bit overwhelming for me.

That being said, so what? If that's the worst problem that "Snowbound Horror" has got (and it probably is), the abominable snowman song titles don't hurt it in the slightest. In fact, depending on where you listen to this album, maybe it actually helps. Try to find one of those snow bars with cups and benches carved out of ice and turn your ear bugs to maximum volume. That might be the best place to listen to this album, to complete the ambiance, to really pull you into the story.

But I live in Southern California so the closest I'm going to get to that is sitting, stuck on the freeway, "Snowbound Horror" bursting the car speakers, with the air conditioning turned up as high as it will go.

You know what? It'll still sound great.
