"A Million Years," from Purple Skies, starts out with an introductory instrumental, "Haven," that tells you all you need to know about this album.
It's all big, thick guitars, buzzing with stoner groove, and songs with melodies that often reminded me of Jethro Tull. The vocals are smooth and melodic, clear as a bell, and feel folksy, somehow. Most of the songs are dinosaur-step slow and heavy, focusing on the power of their crushing vibe rather than the speed of their riffs, and many of those tracks start off with a short intro that slowly builds to the song's main theme.
I really liked what I heard here. The combination of stoner-heavy guitars, mammoth paces, surprisingly smooth vocals and shockingly brilliant production all come together to give you a little something different that is, at the same time, just a little familiar. Plus, the louder this was played, the better it got. Always a good sign.
My favorite tracks were the title track with its buzzcut guitars, and the closing track, "Red Road," with its powerful atmospheric sound. But there isn't a track here that makes me punch the NEXT button, and that's a good thing, too.
