Whether or not you'll enjoy Mystfall's "Embers of a Dying World" really depends on whether you're a fan of symphonic metal or not. The epic musicality here—with its pummeling, action movie rhythms, its rabid hybrid of soaring symphonic music and crushing heavy metal, its operatic vocals mixed with throat-tearing vocal growls—is the personification of the genre. It's hard to describe to those unfamiliar but imagine Games of Thrones meets Iron Maiden and Obituary in a dark alley. That may kind of give you an idea.
"Embers of a Dying World" made me realize I don't listen to enough symphonic metal. As a huge fan of movie scores and really loud rock'n'roll, the combination is a perfect match for me. And that mix tends to make everything bigger, grander ... and even more epic.
That being said, if instrumental breaks with a classical music edge aren't your cup of tea, if you're not a fan of operatic, female voices, this combination may come off as too odd for you. And that's okay. I'd recommend giving "Embers of a Dying World" a listen anyway, just to give you an idea what you're missing (or not).
This album is definitely best listened to with headphones, in a place that you can focus, so you can catch every detail. "Embers of a Dying World" is rich with texture and variety, the musicianship is jaw-dropping, the production values are through the roof and, who knows, maybe after about forty minutes you'll discover you're a fan of symphonic metal after all.
Of course, if you already are a fan, then you'll find very little disagreeable about Mystfall's latest.
