It's been eight years since Monsternaut released a new album (2018's "Enter the Storm), too many years for me to remember what that album sounded like. But I can tell you this: "Approaching Doom" is ten solid tracks of fuzz-laden guitar, punishing drums and eardrum-vibrating bass that'll have your brains rattling around in your skull like dice in a Yahtzee cup.
Despite the fuzzy guitars, Monsternaut doesn't do the full-on doom or stoner thing here. It's much closer to a Black Sabbath-sound, thought perhaps not as gloomy. And the longest track clocks out at just over 4:30, which is about half the typical length of a stoner track (i.e., Kyuss's "Whitewater" at 7:53). There's nothing wrong with longer tracks, I'm just trying to illustrate the difference between Monsternaut and stoner/doom.
My favorite tracks were the staccato march of the title track; the locomotive thrust of "Happy Monday" and the closer, "Final Pain," with its incendiary leads.
Let's hope it's not another eight years until we get another stellar album from Monsternaut.
