...Koch Records will release "Free the West Memphis Three," a benefit CD for three convicted men whom EDDIE SPAGHETTI of the SUPERSUCKERS and Danny Bland and Scott Parker of Aces & Eights Recordings are convinced are innocent. "These men were vilified for wearing the wrong clothes and listening to the wrong music," says Spaghetti. "I'm by no means the first person to question this, nor am I the last. These guys were made into scapegoats so residents could have a target for their anger." According to prosecutors, the West Memphis Three (Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley) are responsible for the murder of three eight-year-olds in 1993. Spaghetti and others apparently believe the trio are innocent, according to a Koch Records press release, based partly on the fact that Misskelley, a 17-year-old with an IQ of 72, confessed after being interrogated for almost 12 hours, after having been promised reward money and without having an attorney or parent present. ...A federal judge in San Francisco has issued the order to shut down the popular Napster program. Stating, "When the infringing is of such a wholesale magnitude, the plaintiffs are entitled to enforce their copyrights," Judge Marilyn Hall Patel granted an injunction that forces the song-swapping service to shut down at midnight on Friday, July 28th. Napster attorneys say they will appeal the decision...

...CHI CHENG, bassist for the DEFTONES, has released "Bamboo Parachute," a collection of 25 spoken word pieces which is only available at The Deftones website at http://www.deftones.com. Says Cheng, "I had six books worth of material sitting around collecting dust. Although I'd like to get published, I convinced myself that I didn't have time to deal with all those rejection notices. Instead, I decided to cop out and do a spoken-word album." Half of the proceeds from the sale of the CD will go to homeless teens and WEAVE, a Sacramento-based non-profit agency specializing in domestic violence and sexual assault prevention and victim assistance. Cheng adds, "I think people should be more involved within their own communities. In addition to WEAVE, I'm starting a music program for homeless teens in Sacramento.
