...METALLICA has postponed the recording of their new CD as singer/guitarist JAMES HETFIELD has entered a rehabilitation facility to undergo treatment for alcoholism and other addictions. In a statement, the band said, "James has entered an undisclosed facility and he will continue to receive treatment until further notice. ...METALLICA and NAPSTER have finally put away their swords, coming to a settlement that will allow the online song-swapping site to offer select Metallica tunes. Hank Barry, interim chief executive officer of Napster, said, "Metallica has taken a courageous stand and a tough and principled approach to the protection of its name and creative output, and that of other artists. They brought to our attention essential artists' rights issues which we've addressed in our new technology. We respect what they've done and regret any harm which this dispute may have caused them." Adds METALLICA's LARS ULRICH, "I think we've resolved this in a way that works for fans, recording artists and songwriters alike. Our beef hasn't been with the concept of sharing music; everyone knows that we've never objected to our fans trading tapes of our live concert performances. The problem we had with Napster was that they never asked us or other artists if we wanted to participate in their business. We believe that this settlement will create the kind of enhanced protection for artists that we've been seeking from Napster. We await Napster's implementation of a new model which will allow artists to choose how their creative efforts are distributed. It's good that they're going legit."...

...CORPORATE AVENGER have ruffled a few feathers with the lyrics from their CD, "Freedom Is a State of Mind," due in stores on July 24th. In response to such songs as "The Bible is Bullshit" and "Drug Dealing God," certain groups have called for banning the album, boycotting stores that sell it and the band has even received death threats. Says Ed Franke, VP of Sales at Koch Records, "I've never had such a backlash of feedback from retailers relating to a specific title before. ...PUSH has re-signed with Z Records. Says MARTIE PETERS, "Holy shit!!!! I must say the last couple of weeks have been the hardest and most confusing in my musical career. Along with the other guys in the band I decided to call it a day because there were too many things we couldn't solve. I have been working very hard since the break-up finishing the new material for my solo debut. While there are some differing opinions among us as to the advisability of this change in course, there will be no lasting animosity. Bands, even this one, are inherently transient, and our deep respect for one another as musicians and human beings will not be diluted by this inevitable split. We remain very, very proud of what we've accomplished, and grateful for the rare chance we've had to participate in this ambitious, audacious crackpot experiment.
