...MEGADETH's new CD will be entitled "The World Needs a Hero" and is due on May 15th on Sanctuary Records. Explains vocalist/lead guitarist DAVE MUSTAINE, "I think that the world needs a hero because there are no more rock stars, Axl (Rose) killed that. What the world needs is an enema but there are too many assholes in the world to choose from to know where to put the hose, so a hero would be my second choice. It's kind of hard to find a rhyme for 'enema." "The World Needs a Hero" contains 11 new tracks written by Mustaine with one track co-written by Al Pitrelli. Some sample titles include "Burning Bridges," "Moto Psycho," "Disconnect," and "Return to Hangar," a sequel to the tune on the "Rust In Peace" album. "This record was written in spite of all the people who tried to turn us into an alternative pop machine," says Mustaine, "Basically, no one was welcome into the studio, and if they did get in we tried not to let them influence us. Feed us, sure - but anything else - forget about it!" In other Megadeth news, Mustaine will co-star on an episode of "Black Scorpion," an action series on the Sci-Fi Channel, due to air on February 2nd. Mustaine plays an arsonist named Torchy Thompson. Folks, we've seen "Black Scorpion" and Mustaine's appearance might be the only reason to see it again. That and the program's exceptionally high level of quality cleavage...

...It may be one of the sexiest cities in the world, but the authorities in Rio De Janeiro still grabbed NICK OLIVERI of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and held him for ten minutes after he appeared onstage wearing nothing but his guitar. Oliveri, who explained that he had appeared thusly attired in other countries, said, "I did not know it was a crime here in Brazil, otherwise I would not have done it. I apologize to the public and the Brazilian people." Oliveri was released shortly after being detained and it is unlikely he will face any charges. ...INCUBUS have completed a new animated video for the third single from their Platinum "Make Yourself" CD. "Drive," was filmed just before Christmas in Minneapolis by director Phil Harder, who also directed the band's last video, "Stellar." The video will include animation drawn by the band's BRANDON BOYD and JOSE PASILLAS. Says Boyd, "I've always been fascinated with experimental animation and this video gave me a chance to bring together my passion for music and drawing." ...JASON NEWSTED has dropped out of METALLICA, according to a statement released from the band. According to Newsted, "Due to private and personal reasons, and the physical damage that I have done to myself over the years while playing the music that I love, I must step away from the band. This is most difficult decision of my life, made in the best interest of my family, myself, and the continued growth of Metallica. I extend my love, thanks, and best wishes to my brothers Lars, James, and Kirk, and the rest of the Metallica family, friends, and fans whom have made these years so unforgettable." The split seems completely amicable, with the remaining bandmembers having nothing but accolades for Newsted. Plans continue for the band to record a new studio album for release later this year or early next year...

...After a court ruling in December, former members of THE DEAD KENNEDYS will be releasing digitally re-mastered albums, previously unreleased live albums and home videos. According to East Bay Ray, the band's guitarist, several labels have already been in contact with the bandmembers regarding such an undertaking. Explains bassist Klaus Flouride, "The jury found that Biafra purposely defrauded us, his band mates and partners. This was about equality, fairness and the democracy of a band.
