ZONARIA
"The Cancer Empire" (Century Media; 2008)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
Zonaria's "The Cancer Empire" is pummeling metal. It's the kind of grinding, fast-paced sound that you’d expect from bands like Dimmu Borgir and Arch Enemy, with cookie monster death metal vocals that don't get ridiculously rough but are still plenty brutal and harsh.
The interesting thing about this Swedish band is that, although each song sounds a bit like the one that precedes it, is the use of keyboards/strings/synths and some cinematic themes throughout give it an edge that make it a little bit different than you might expect in this genre.
"The Cancer Empire" is an interesting, unique album that will hook you from the first play on.
