"Back Into the Light" (Brennus Music; 2021)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
French rockers Zoe play a
hard-driving rock'n'roll with Rolling Stones-meets-Motorhead riffage, clear
vocals with a hint of punk rock sneer and lots of high energy.
There’s a lot of heavy here, from the
close-to-classic-rock-paced tracks ("Down in a Hole," "Go Like a Bomb," "By Your
Side") to the racing rockers ("Back Into the Light," and my favorite "Band of
Brothers.") No token ballad either. The ten tracks on "Back into the Light" are
all unapologetically hard and heavy, with a modern spin. Some of the album
reminds me of when Aerosmith was great, and some of it reminds me of more recent
Motorhead.
The label calls the band "hard stoner rock from France."
I don’t get the "stoner" part … I don’t hear any stoner at all as I listen to
"Back into the Light" … but I get the hard rock part and heartily recommend this
album to anyone else who gets it as well.
Zoe: Fred Barroit - vocals guitar; Aldo Ségard – guitar;
Holy Capitaine - drums; Clem Burette : bass.
