YARDBIRDS

"The Yardbirds Ultimate!" (Rhino)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

If you're wondering why "The Yardbirds" are reviewed here on Rough Edge, let me ask you a quick question: Do the names Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page mean anything to you?

That's right - all three of those legendary axe-slingers served some time in the Yardbirds, and this fantastic 2-CD collection from Rhino Records contains early work by them all. The CDs are divided into 3 sections (not the three you think, however - the tracks are broken down by manager, not guitarists) and features live versions and three tracks from the Keith Relf solo recordings.

This 52-track set is terrific as a history lesson of the three guitar greats, as a collection of hits that you may be surprised you know, for its crisp and clear sound quality and for the 52-page, accompanying booklet that contains notes on each track as well as rare photographs.

Purists may argue over some of the included tracks but the Rough Edge motto rings true here: "Music is the most individual art." One person's favorite tracks are another person's most hated. What are you gonna do?
