THE WINERY DOGS
Reviewed by Snidermann
There is just something about a three person band that I happen to like ... a lot. My latest review project, The Winery Dogs and their new recording "III," , is just such a band. Don’t get me wrong; I also like the classic four person, guitar-heaving line-up. However, with a three person band, the dynamics seem to change, the music seems to be grittier, a bit more raw and, in the case of The Winery Dogs, that aspect is apparent from the first note.
And what more would you expect from a band that includes Richie Kotzen (Poison, Mr. Big) on guitar, Billy Sheehan (Steve Vai, David Lee Roth) on bass and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre and Flying Colors) on drums?
The music on "III" showcases the amazing talent of those three band members to a tee. Every aspect of the music is very well done: the writing, presentation and production are all top-notch. Another thing I like about a three person band is that the bassist often plays not only the low parts but also acts as a rhythm guitarist. It gives the music a unique sound.
If you like good solid rock music done very well by musicians you've doubt heard before in other bands, The Winery Dogs are right up your alley. Also, the charisma of the band shows in each and every song. Good music is timeless and new music done well should be treasured. it's time for me to go explore the earlier recordings of The Winery Dogs.
