WALNUT GROVE DC

"Deeper" (Autoproduction Asso District Prod; 2025)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

French rockers Walnut Grove DC have delivered a kick-ass, 7-track collection of hard-rocking tunes enhanced with heavy stoner guitar, fast-paced rhythms, rough-hewn vocals and a bigger-than-life sound.

Walnut Grove DC is labeled as a "stoner metal" band but I think that does them an injustice. Sure, the fuzzy guitars are here but they're faster than you may be used to. They give each song an epic feel that transcends the typical stoner sound and makes "Deeper" something more. The tracks here, for the most part, are unusually fast-paced for a stoner album (and, no, I'm not talking Motorhead or Slayer fast) as are the vocals, which sometimes bring to mind the legendary Lee Ving of Fear, with their bluesy buzz.

My favorite tracks are the opener, "50 Foot Woman," one of the fastest paced-songs on the record;  the easy-paced "Tumbleweed" with its throbbing bass bottom; and the cool drive of "Mint Julep." Also worth noting is the album closer, "No More," which falls back into the more familiar stoner sound.

It's been seven years since the last new album from Walnut Grove DC. Here's to hoping it won't be another seven years before we get another!
