VOLTO!

"Incitare" (Fantasy Records; 2013)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

Volto! is a band that has Danny Carey in it so I really don't need to write much more ... but I will anyway. Volto! was born out of the jazz fusion band Pigmy Love Circus where Danny and John Ziegler would perform together. Add in a bass player named Lance Morrison and you've got Volto!

The music on "Incitare" is jazz and progressive music. There is a jazz sound from the drums and bass and oftimes Danny will play a jazz run but when he gets going on a solo and then turns that into a heavy progressive riff. Well, it's hard to stop listening because your ears want more!

Fans of Tool will no doubt gobble this trio of awesomeness right up. Danny Carey has a unique sound and somewhat of a signature sound because you know him when you hear it, but he also has a jazz sound that many people might not know about. "Incitare" is a purely instrumental album so those who want to hear some closeted Tool will forget all about that when Danny cues up this band.

This would be a great disc to put on during a special evening with your significant other. Depending on their level of jazz and progressive music tastes, I'd say it will be time well spent just listening and absorbing the music and each other.
