VIOLET
"Mysteria" (Yellow Muffin Records; 2024)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
There's as many different varieties of AOR music as there are any other genre. There's the harder-edged rock versions (like Axe ore Journey) and there's the much lighter, much more radio-friendly version ... like Violet.
Violet's "Mysteria" is ten tracks of keyboard-drenched rock that sometimes veers dangerously over into pop territory. Sometimes they sound a little like ABBA. There are moments of bombastic sound (such as on the title track) but, for the most part, this album plays it too safely, shooting for music that could easily be picked up and played by your local radio station.
Don't get me wrong. I know there's an audience for the type of music that Violet performs. And it's performed well here (even if it's often a little over-produced). But I like my music with a little more bite, a little more edge and with a lot more guitar. "Mysteria" might just not be my type of music. Throughout its 45-minute runtime, I was engaged only a couple of times. The rest of the time, I was just waiting for the next track, hoping it would catch my attention better than the previous track. Alas, that never happened.
Again, maybe it's just me. Give them a listen and see what you think. There's a saying, "Music is the most individual art," and one person's disappointment could be another's thrill.
