VICIOUSPHERE

"Third Degree" (Self-produced)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Toronto, Canada's Viciousphere plays unique, rock solid, guitar-driven hard rock. According to their bio, Viciousphere have often been compared to Pantera. Me, I don't see that. They have also been compared to Corrosion of Conformity and there's more of a resemblance there. Hey, they admit they've been influenced by everything so maybe all of those comparisons are valid. But you know what? The comparisons don't matter because Viciousphere has taken their myriad influences and squeezed them into a sound that is all their own.

Solid, powerful guitars, killer drums and bass and a vocalist who sounds a lot like Metallica's James Hetfield but, again, sings with a sound all his own. A very talented band; in their musicianship, their songwriting and even in their marketing ("Third Degree" is very professionally done and you get a whopping 19 tracks on it!).

VICIOUSPHERE: Scott Harner, guitar, vocals; Rob Somerton, bass; Jeff (Angus) Willstrop, guitar; Dan Shimbart, drums.

Rating Guide:

A classic. This record will kick your ass.

Killer. Not a classic but it will rock your world.

So-so. You've heard better.

Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.

Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
