VANDEN

"Victims" (Disix; 2006)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Vanden is a talented band with plenty of charisma who unfortunately fall into a genre where too much music sounds like too much other music. In other words, although "Victims" is competent, well-produced and definitely listenable, it probably doesn't boast enough originality to get you to make a return trip.

The music has a modern hard rock sound that benefits from a crunchier guitar sound than most. Try to imagine Cheap Trick style guitars pumping up the music of Hawthorne Heights and you'll get a general idea.

"Victims" is strong enough to make one look forward to whatever the band produces next with the hopes that the band's natural growth takes them to the next level on their subsequent outings.
