THE URCHIN

"Another Day, Another Sorry State" (Broken Rekids; 2001)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

There are a few bands that have the word "Urchin" in their name. Urchin was a band that was led by Dave Murray and Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden. Sound of Urchin is an eclectic alternative rock band from New York that has toured with just about everybody from Tenacious D to Public Enemy. These guys, The Urchin, are three musicians from Japan playing Emo, punk and pop.

All of the songs are fairly short, part of the punk sound requirement, and only four of them are longer than three minutes in length. I like the guitar here because it's got some cool riffs and a few tasty little solos. The drums are a constant driving force as well. The vocals have that punk attitude behind them and from the first listen you would not guess Japan as their home base.

I'm not a huge fan of punk but these guys should be more recognized than they are. Since I stumbled onto them, I'll give them a boost and invite you to give them a listen, too. I'm sure if you want to add some more punk to your life this band should do the trick.

The Urchin: Masa – vocal/guitar; Big Champion – drums; Mogura – bass/vocal.
