UNLOCO

"Healing" (Maverick; 2001)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

There's always been a fine line between melodic rock and rock that's too wimpy to let your friends catch you listening to. There are many bands that manage to walk that tightrope and still kick your ass while offering some melodic songwriting. There are even more that just can't cut it.

But wait until you hear Unloco.

Unloco delivers a rock-solid guitar-heavy sound (with the key word being "heavy") that is modern-sounding, hard and amazingly accessible. Songwriting is the key here: Although the band's musical prowess is obvious and impressive, it is the songwriting style that gives the band a rough-edged, ass-kicking jolt while at the same time offering tremendously addictive hooks.

One of those unique bands that has a sound truly all their own, Unloco can't be crammed into any musical genre pigeonhole or compared to other bands. The bottom line is this: If you like your rock'n'roll hard and heavy yet just this side of extreme noise, Unloco is what you've been waiting for.

Unloco is: Jose L. Duenas - vocals; Brian Arthur - guitars; Victor H. Escareno - bass guitar; Pedro A. Navarette - drums.
