UNLEASHED

"Hammer Battalion" (SPV; 2008)

Reviewed by Mike SOS

Veteran Swedish squad Unleashed return with a relentlessly thrashing 13-track blackened death metal offering whose crushing subtlety and gruff presentation perfectly displays the group's warmongering and blasphemous qualities.

From the sonic bludgeoning of "I Want You Dead" to the mid-paced black metal maliciousness spewed from "Black Horizon," Unleashed may leave little to the imagination yet do a formidable job by building the destructive riffs and galloping grooves found on "Your Children Will Burn" and "Home of the Brave."

Embodying the spirit of menacing metal while sticking close to the blueprint set forth by bands like Slayer, Entombed, and Amon Amarth, "Hammer Battalion" contains the solid shot of sharpened brutality that will keep the heads banging and the air guitarists in a tizzy.
