UNISONIC
"Unisonic" (EarMusic/Edel AG; 2012)
Reviewed by Jeff Rogers
Fans of Helloween will love Unisonic, primarily because it has two members
from the aforementioned band: Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske. Gamma Ray fans will
have reason to listen up as well. Power metal may have moved across a few ponds
but it's still alive. Unisonic combine power metal, heavy metal and hard rock
and do it quite well. This brand or genre of music may have had its time in
America but fans are united by music and, whether you're Finnish, German,
Japanese or Swedish, you know the music. (I find it interesting that power metal
performed in other countries is sung in English.)
Many of the tracks on this disc have a great vocal climb and an even better solo
and that's the way it should be. The vocal harmonies are outstanding, the drums
sound great and the bass has plenty of flavor. The rhythm guitar is the main
point of many songs.
The zip codes may have shifted east but the music hasn't aged at all. The
production is really great and when you get the feeling that these guys enjoy
making metal then you'll sink deeper into their world with ease. We in America
may have lost the drive to play power metal but we did give it to the world.
Unisonic has given it back.
Unisonic: Michael Kiske - lead vocals; Mandy Meyer - lead & rhythm guitars; Kai
Hansen - lead & rhythm guitars; Dennis Ward - bass; Kosta Zafiriou - drums,
percussion.
