TURBO
"Broke & Ugly" (Crowprint Distribution; 2024)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
Canada's Turbo comes racing out of the gate with "Ruthless," the first track on their new eight track collection, "Broke & Ugly." With an evil laugh, their lead vocalist tells us "Well, it's just so good to be fuckin' back," even though their last album, "Fast as Fuck," was just released four years ago. (Okay, I get it ... that's a long time to not be rocking).
The first track, "Ruthless," sets you up for the following seven tracks. Sneering, snickering, growling lead vocals. Gang choruses. Merciless, high-speed rhythms. Guitars that feel like they could cut your skin. All eight tracks here just blow by at a blistering place, leaving a path of smoking destruction in their wake. The production is rough and raw and lets the performances take center stage here. And the band's energy and enthusiasm bumps everything up a notch. You can't help but get caught up in it.
If you're looking for an album with the token ballad on it, look somewhere else. Turbo wants to do nothing more than kick your ass throughout these eight furious tracks, and they get exactly what they want by the time the last track, "Down in Mexico," fades out, leaving you wanting more.
My favorite tracks were the infection "Ruthless," the galloping "Nothing to Nowhere" and the epic title track. The aformentioned "Down in Mexico" is a smile-inducing stand-out as well.
Bottom line here is that, if you're looking for some down-and-dirty, rough-edged rock'n'roll, Turbo's "Broke & Ugly" is probably exactly what you're looking for.
