TRAUMATISM
"Traumatical Pieces" (Gorgans Productions)
Reviewed by Brian Connelly
Traumatism is a local Quebecian hardcore metal band churning out anywhere from standard to experimental blasts. They include all the necessary trappings of a heavy band; jack-hammer drumming, demonically low-pitched growling, power chords and full-on bass. But what caught my attention was what else they brought into the fold.
"Stupid Pedophiliac" and "Fuckops" added "tough guy" barking a la Rob Zombie which interchanged well with the possessed vocals and high-pitched squealing that I have only since heard Soilent Green do so well. Drummer "Stephane" added plenty of bass-kicks and off-time rhythms to mix up the typically endless barrage of jack-hammering, creating awesome stop-start rhythms for guitarist "Kevin" and bassist "Dany" who, although lacking the range of most death metal ax grinders, has amazing timing and a good palette of chords and riffs to choose from.
All this was done live, on vinyl, making the listening experience that much more intimate and meaningful. All in all, when the beast within me screams for something raw, I know I can’t go wrong with this disc.
