THYRANE

"Hypnotic" (Century Media Records; 2003)

Reviewed by Mike SOS

Thyrane is a Finnish metal troupe that uses a very electronic approach in its metal sound. With "Hypnotic," this quartet mixes the basics of black and industrial metal with melody, creating a sound that isn't as heavy as other bands yet stands on its own in a very old school metal way.

If it weren't for the electronic influence, Thyrane would be neck-and-neck alongside Venom and Accept in terms of straight ahead metal attack. Adding that extra dimension, however, not only updates the sound but also shoots Thyrane into an entirely new realm somewhere between Swedish metal and Rammstein-eque muscularity.
