THUMB

"3" (Victory; 2001)

Reviewed by Rose Grech

Thumb, one of the first bands to utilize hip-hop influenced vocals over heavy rock and slight electronic sampling, has a new album out entitled "3." They have been doing this since 1993 with little US acclaim as the mainstream music industry has been building a similar sound.

Thumb is an aggressive yet thought provoking German hardcore rock band. Though the music is mostly driven by heavy drums, guitar and bass, there is some hip-hop undertones with clear, catchy yet anger ridden lyrics.

They also reveal a lighter, softer side with their song "Stupid" were vocalist Claus Grabke sounds sincere and saddened. Grabke's vocal style could be compared to bands like Rage Against the Machine, Papa Roach and Deftones added with his own distinctive, brutal and at times comforting sound.

Thumb successfully blends different popular styles of music creating a diverse range of songs. Their newest album "3" is the latest incarnation of these trendsetters.

So whatever kind of music you are into they may have something to offer to you with their new sound, which has a great variety of musical style elements.
