TEXAS TERRI BOMB

"Your Lips ... My Ass!" (TKO; 2004)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Seeing the name of producer extraordinaire Jack Douglas on any CD is reason enough to give it a listen (Douglas is listed here as Executive Producer). And, listening to the thirteen tracks of "Your Lips ... My Ass!" one is likely to recognize Douglas's uncanny ability to give the guitar a deep, throaty, raspy ... trademark ... sound. Still, this CD by Texas Terri Laird is a little different than we've come to expect from Douglas, who has produced artists as varied as Aerosmith, Cheap Trick and Clutch.

What sets this CD apart is the album's raw energy. "Your Lips ... My Ass!" is a gritty, raucous punk rock album that brings to mind bands and artists like The Runaways, Joan Jett, Wendy O. Williams and Courtney Love. Texas Terri's voice bears a slight resemblance to Jett's, while the songs range from somewhere between the Ramones and L7.

There's no new ground covered here but I don't expect there was supposed to be either. The point of "My Lips ... Your Ass" is as clear as the CD's title: to blast the listener with raw attitude, big guitars and gritty lyrics. In that aspect, it easily does the trick.

Noteworthy is a rough-edged cover of Thin Lizzy's classic "The Rocker" and a not quite as successful rendition of Iggy Pop's "I Got a Right."
