TEAM SLEEP

"Team Sleep" (Maverick Recordings; 2005)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

This is the side project/experimental alternative offering from Chino Moreno, who most notably fronts the Deftones. There are all sorts of descriptive names for this type of music: Shoegaze, Dream Pop, Trip Hop. Let me add one: "HUH?!" I know that Chino doesn't have to play Deftones music 25 hours a day (a real rocker borrows an hour from tomorrow so they can rock out longer than the average person) but this stuff is so far left it's in the alien camp.

Some of the music has potential but it's mixed with airy vocals and just weird sounding music. Sometimes its sounds like Marilyn Manson and at other times its sounds like the Smashing Pumpkins. I don't know who to press the Silly Putty against because the image returned is faint but you can still recognize it when you hear it.

A lot of the lyrics are referenced to Edgar Allen Poe stories. Poe's got mystery and the macabre under his belt and when his writing is transferred to music it gets even stranger. When the music gets soft it sounds like Porcupine Tree without the expected crescendo or background grungy guitar. Chino and Rob Crow sing most of the songs and they have haunting voices. Mary Timony sings on a couple of tracks and she's got a strange voice too.

Although it's not what you think Chino should have done with his time off, I still have to give him some credit for creating the music but I don't know if it's worth the space ride it takes to get there. Its 53:59 long in case you wanted to know.
