SWEET
OBLIVION
FEATURING GEOFF TATE
"Relentless" (Frontiers Music SRL; 2021)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
This second outing by Sweet Oblivion is another slab of classic metal sound that can't help but bring to mind the sound of Queensryche. This is thanks mostly to the vocal style of Geoff Tate (he of the "featuring" title) and who is incredible, as always, on this release. Tate has one of the most distinctive voices in rock'n'roll and his presence brings every song up a notch here.
Not that they need much bringing up. The tracks on "Relentless" are solid 80s rockers through and through and the band performs with energy and style. There’s a nice variety here as well, with the hard rocking tunes, the more ballad-y tunes (the poignant "I'll Be the One"), and the surprising "Aria," which I believe Geoff sings in Italian(?).
Fans of 80s heavy metal, and especially fans of Queensryche, will find plenty to like on "Relentless."

"Sweet Oblivion Featuring Geoff Tate" (Frontiers Music SRL; 2019)
Reviewed by Snidermann
Sweet Oblivion featuring Geoff Tate (Queensryche) is a throwback to the metal of the late 90s and I have to say I am thankful for that. I think there should be more of that type of music around: Pantera, Metallica, Iced Earth, Megadeth the list goes on. Thundering guitar, screaming vocals and a shit-load of 90s attitude; that was (in my opinion) the highlight of some really killer metal that is frankly not enough of any more.
What draws me to this recording is their approach to the music that is loud, in-your-face, take-no-prisoners and with no bullshit. That makes this music simply irresistible to old metal heads like me. I did not know how much I missed the 90s type music until I listened to this recording. Now I have to go back and immerse myself in the total fucking bitching music that came out of that era. Rock on, Sweet Oblivion, and cheers to Geoff Tate for bringing this type of music to the front of my mind once again. Fuck yeah!
