SUMMONING THE LICH
"Under the Reviled Throne" (Prosthetic; 2024)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
"Under the Reviled Throne" is a punishing forty minutes and eleven tracks that will push you back into your seat cushion as you listen and then leave you wide-eyed in surprise. With drums that sound like a German MG42 machine gun, vocals that scream like a banshee and then growl like a demon, bass that paints the pathway to hell and guitars that buzz like chainsaws, this grueling listening experience is exactly what you're looking for if you're in the mood for some death metal and fantasy.
I've read elsewhere that "Under the Reviled Throne" is a concept album but, at the fiery speed of its unspooling, I've got no idea what that concept might be. Regardless, this album works. There's a couple of nice surprises. The opening track, "Return to the Soil," ends with some short classical strings that close out the song with startling juxtaposition, and "Bastell Dirge" is a quiet, guitar instrumental that calmly leads into the hammering "The Carrion Fleet." Other tracks worth mentioning are "Potion Seller," which leave your head spinning and "My Horrors Unending," a heavy, slower-paced track that builds into a furious tornado of sound.
Hey, I get it. If chaotic bass drums and screeching vocals aren't your thing, you probably won't like "Under the Reviled Throne." But if this is your type of music, or even something you occasionally dabble in, this album is worth a listen.
