SUDDEN DEATH
"Infection of Hate" (Deadbang; 2004)
Reviewed by Christopher J. Kelter
Sudden Death is a brutal death metal band based in Italy, but sound more American than most American death metal bands as of late. Even the band’s name sounds American; I can imagine that the guys in the band said exactly what Blakkheim said when naming the Bloodbath project: “What? You mean to tell me that the name Sudden Death hasn’t been taken by any other band? We’ll take it for ourselves!”
“Infection Of Hate” is in the vein of Cannibal Corpse and Immolation with touch of Cryptopsy-like drumming and ultra-fast pacing. Which is to say that “Injection Of Hate” is an aggressive display of intensity featuring technical and harsh elements befitting the brutal death genre. The average metal fan wouldn’t confuse “Injection Of Hate” with any other genre – there is simply no question as to what Sudden Death do.
“Infection Of Hate” is Sudden Death’s sophomore effort (following their debut “Devoured Inside”). And they play the brutal death genre quite well – I just don’t hear enough to separate them from every other band in the genre. But the songs are snappy and the disc sounds complete – there’s nothing lacking given the genre’s constraints.
Like the limited appeal of the brutal death metal genre, “Injection Of Hate” will probably only appeal to those who appreciate the brutal death genre’s unrelenting (although narrow) expression of aggression. While most Rough Edge readers wouldn’t care a lick for “Injection Of Hate” fans of brutal death will probably have a lot to talk about after hearing it.
“Infection Of Hate” was produced by Sudden Death. The sound quality is excellent.
Sudden Death: Flavio Tempesta on vocals and lead guitar, Luigi Maiolini on lead guitar, Dario Petraczek on bass, and Andrea Pro on drums.
