THE STEP KINGS

"Let's Get It On" (Roadrunner; 1999)

Reviewed by Snidermann

Roadrunner Records have got themselves a winner with The Step Kings. This power packed metal trio from the New York City music underground plays a mixture of heavy metal with a pinch (only a pinch, mind you) of hard core rap. The combination is nothing short of breath taking; one minute the song is totally engored in metal and the next note is solid rap - and then back again and again etc., etc.

The music rocks like a moving freight train and the vocals are gritty and emotional. The musical quality and assortment of sounds is much more than three people should be able to pull off but the Step Kings do it with apparent ease. Bob McLynn and Fern share vocal responsibilities and do it with gusto, charm and a drive that motivates my metal soul. An awesome and inventive band.

Bob McLynn on bass and vocals, Fern guitar and vocals and Mike Watt on drums.
