SPYDER BABY

"Let Us Prey" (Blind Prophecy; 2008)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

Add my guitarsaws and Sniderman's together and give this guy eight of 'em! I was in a slump listening to a lot of recycled music but when this creepy disc started, my earlobes wiggled. Steve Branch is a poster boy for Goth, metal and industrial music.

This band has a NIN sound, and a Ministry one too. Even Rob Zombie is represented here. That’s not to say that you’ve heard this stuff before because you haven’t, or you’d need a defibrillator handy.

This would be a great soundtrack to race cars to, or take in a midnight drive ... on the sidewalks of main street maybe. The guitar is like a battering ram and the drums just keep going until last call. This disc has twelve smashing songs with an intro to countdown the liftoff of the rocket named “Monsterville.”

"Let Us Prey" sounds like Dope and BLS had a head on collision; add the fact that Steve Branch is the guy who plays all the instruments and you’ve gotta give him props! This fact surely allows him to fight with himself on all levels of creativity. The solos are scalding hot, faster and nastier than a ticked-off snake!

If you’re looking for something fresh and raw to combat the staleness of music then this jagged knife will cut away those layers with delight.

"Let Us Prey" (Blind Prophecy; 2008)

Metal energy radiates from the speakers on Spyder Baby’s release, "Let Us Prey." And Prey they do! Right from the start, Spyder Baby shows what they are made of with heavy metal and a punk flavor mixed together to make a really cool CD.

The music has a Rob Zombie-like horror musical mix and it ain’t bad to be linked with Mr. Zombie! This band is that good. I guess you could call it industrial metal but I just  what I call it simply good music.

I did some research and discovered that this is a one man project and that one man is Steve Branch. I must say I am very impressed with this guy's ability to play all the instruments on this release and he gets even more kudos because I did not realize that when I was first listening to this release!
