SLOWMOTION APOCALYPSE

"My Own Private Armageddon" (Tribunal; 2005)

Reviewed by Christopher J. Kelter

Slowmotion Apocalypse is a band from Italy that plays in the great tradition of Swedish melodic death metal. “My Own Private Armageddon” is the band’s debut full-length CD. It’s as if In Flames never really changed their style from “The Jester Race” and was subsequently influenced by the type of sound that Killswitch Engage has made so popular in recent memory. One might be inclined to think that the preceding thought arose from the idea that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" but in my mind that’s not the case.

Slowmotion Apocalypse’s use of dual guitar and emphasis on Iron Maiden-like solos enhance the songs considerably. The use of keyboards is always a nice touch – even subtle use of keyboards in the melodic death realm provides a good dose of atmosphere and mood that guitars often cannot create. The vocals have an obvious nod to the legendary Tomas Lindberg, but that’s OK in my book.

“My Own Private Armageddon” isn’t really groundbreaking, but it does add a fresh energy to a genre that has obviously stagnated in recent years. If you’re still interested in the melodic death metal genre then Slowmotion Apocalypse is worth checking out. I’m just happy that there are bands from Italy that don’t sound like Lacuna Coil.

“My Own Private Armageddon” was produced by Ricardo Pasini and Slowmotion Apocalypse.

Slowmotion Apocalypse: Alberto Zannier on vocals, Ivan Ordorico on lead guitar, Nicolas Milanese on rhythm guitar, Ivo Boscartiol on bass, and Tommaso Corte on drums. Keyboards performed by Andrea Corona.

When Slow Motion Apocalypse came up with their band name, I bet they had a smile on their face because there is noting slow about this band.

Fast-paced metal from start to finish with a bunch of extremely well done metal shit in between, this band from Italy redefines hard and heavy music at a fever pitch with a high quality aspect that is very refreshing.

If you like in-your-face music, then Slowmotion Apocalypse is right up your alley. The name of this CD is "My Own Private Armageddon" and that is just what I thought I experienced when listening to this recording.

Two words perfectly describe "My Own Private Armageddon" and those two words are "ass kicking."
