SKULL BABY

"Give Birth" (Self-produced; 2003)

Reviewed by Mike SOS

Skull Baby is a Gothic death outfit from South Carolina, of all places, whose latest seven-track offering comes off a bit underdeveloped, but with a good sense of character.

Shifting between mopey Bauhaus moments and Scandinavian doom rock flashes, this quintet seems to be serious about being all gloom and doom, and the music suggests that they've wore out their share of Sisters of Mercy CDs.

While there's nothing here that a good black metal import can't do for you, Skull Baby's obsession with the anti-Bible Belt philosophy and old school Goth rock flare is refreshing in these times when Disturbed are lauded as being dark and ominous.

Rating Guide:

A classic. This record will kick your ass.

Killer. Not a classic but it will rock your world.

So-so. You've heard better.

Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.

Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
