SHE WANTS REVENGE

"This is Forever" (Flawless Records; 2007)

A cross between Devo, The Cars and Soft Cell, the inclusion of She Wants Revenge here at RoughEdge.com may seem out of place. There's a reason for that: It is. There is no possible way to call "This is Forever" by She Wants Revenge either hard rock, heavy metal or punk.

Still, Flawless Records sent this out to us to review and, although it may not be our genre, we thought we'd give it a spin. The comparisons to the above named bands are accurate, although "This is Forever" contains none of the wackiness that made Devo so much fun and just a hint of the bright, sly intelligence of the Cars. The similarities to Soft Cell and their quirky eeriness are the most obvious, but "This Is Forever" doesn't have the irresistible hooks that made songs like "Tainted Love" so addictive.

Still, fans of new wave and alternative may want to give "This is Forever" a spin. Those looking for something to bang their head to, however, had best look somewhere else.

"She Wants Revenge" (Geffen Records; 2006)

The old saying is usually true: you can't judge a book by its cover. However, the cover of She Wants Revenge's self-titled CD made me expect a lower than average release and, to my surprise, I was correct.

With this CD, She Wants Revenge has tried to bring as the 80s musical style back. Heavy metal was all but nonexistent at the time and what passed for rock'n'roll was A Flock Of Seagulls and Depeche Mode. She Wants Revenge mirrors that musical blandness to a tee.

What passed for popular music in the 80s pretty much sucked. This CD reminds me of Bowling For Soup's "1984." That song is about a daughter who is embarrassed by her mom because all she thinks about is what it was like in 1984. One of the lines from the songs is "When did Motley Crue become classic rock?" and "When did Ozzy become a TV star?"

You get the gist. She Wants Revenge and their self-titled CD is the musical version of that song. Most of the popular music during the 80s was mushy, poppy crap. Most of She Wants Revenge is, too. This CD gets only one guitarsaws and that is for the trip down memory lane and the reminder of how much I hated the music that came out of that era.
