SHADECROWN
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
After I listened to "The Art of Grieving," the first track on Shadecrown's album, "0," I wasn't sure what to think. That particular track seems to be a focus point for the band, and I was surprised at its messy composition and unevenness. I mean, my first thought was, "I'm not going to like this album."
However, by the end of the second track, "In a State of Emergency," I was turning in the opposite direction. "In a State of Emergency" is a driving, flowing track, heavy as hell, that gripped me and held me throughout its runtime. At the end of track four, "Gone," I was impressed enough to back to "The Art of Grieving" and give it another listen. Much better the second time through (although still a bit flawed), after I'd immersed myself in the band's unique sound.
Speaking of that unique sound, Shadecrown are all crushing guitars, a punishing rhythm section, growling vocals (occasionally sweetened by a clean female voice—especially as on the stunning "Under the Waves") and songwriting that spirals and twists and creates an atmosphere all its own. I was also impressed with the album's daring and dramatic production.
I've since learned that Shadecrown is considered "Finnish death metal" (according to their Bandcamp page) and that description should give you a better idea as to what Shadecrown sounds like. Give it a listen—from beginning to end with as little distraction as possible—and I think you'll find "0" a fascinating listen.
