SAINT TO SINNER
"The Unveiling" (Copro Records/Casket Music; 2009)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
I got two copies of Saint to Sinner's CD, "The Unveiling" to review and, yes, I'm going to explain.
The first CD earned only two-and-a-half guitarsaws from me. It has some pretty cool female vocals going for it, with some good riffs and chugging. But, for the most part, it's a little too slow and a little too sterile. Sometimes, oddly, the music and the vocals don't quite seem to fit together. And the production could be a quite a bit tighter here and there. Overall, it was just a little too cold and clinical. The talent was there, without question, but I felt the band probably needed to do a little more work in making things fit.
The second CD, however, was a different story, despite being basically the same music. It's a re-mastered version of the same CD but the sound has been brought to life. It's crisper, cleaner and brighter ... and a whole hell of a lot more fun to listen to. I was startled at the difference in quality and enjoyed the re-mastered version much, much more. Thankfully, I believe that is the version you'll find available for purchase.
The bad news about both CDs, however, is that they contain only five original tracks, and one of them isn't even full-length, clocking in at 1:27. By the time the end of this CD rolls around, you'll be wanting more. There are edited versions of several tracks tacked on at the end, but I'm not sure what the point actually was in adding those tracks. They seem like what they are: filler.
According to the band's website, they were recently in the midst of a line-up change. Here's to hoping we hear from them again soon.
Saint to Sinner: Desiree Villegas - Lead Vocals; Rich Bova - Lead Guitar/Back-Up Vocals; John Lessard - Bass; Nick Tolias - Drums.
