REVOLTING

"Night of the Horrid" (XTreem Music; 2024)

If there's any question about what kind of journey you're going to take with Revolting and their album, "Night of the Horrid," a quick glance at the album cover (what looks like a zombie getting its head cleaved in two with a double-edge axe) and the tracklist (which includes song titles such as "Seven Severed Heads," "Swipe of the Scythe" and "Mallet and Mask,") should give you a pretty good idea.

Yeah, it's death metal and it's pretty good death metal. Considering this is the band's ninth album, that shouldn't be a surprise. "Night of the Horrid," delivers just what it promises with its album cover and track titles. It's a buzz saw of an album, with roaring guitars, frantic pacing and guttural vocals that never go too far into growl territory but never play nice, either.

My favorite tracks were the titles I mentioned earlier: "Seven Severed Heads," with its raging pace and grinding guitars; the chunky "Swipe of the Scythe," and the crushing bulldozer that is "Mallet and Mask."

Revolting has been in the death metal game since 2008 or so and "Night of the Horrid" makes it plain to see why they're still so popular.
