RAVAGER

"The Third Attack" (Pure Steel; 2021)

Reviewed by Mike SOS

Ravager's "The Third Attack" is metalhead's dream. It's got elements of every type of metal imaginable. Power metal, speed metal, and thrash are all readily present here, with flashes of death metal popping up occasionally as well. It's a fiery, frantic forty-two minutes of heavy rock and, by the time that last (long) song fades away, you'll be drained of energy but fired up to start it all over again.

"The Third Attack" starts with a short instrumental, "The Intruders," that slowly fades into a thick riff and thrash metal speed that sets the stage for what you're in for.  The tracks that follow are galloping thrash-paced rockers ("Back to the Real World") or heavy, jackhammer monsters ("A Plague is Born"). Several tracks bring to mind metal legends Cirith Ungol, especially the title track, with its missile sound effects enhancing the songs speed and fury. "Beyond Reality" throws you off initially, with its deceptively slow-paced intro but, fear not! The track picks up speed and fury about halfway through and stays solid until the end. The album closes out with the eight minute epic "Destroyer," which once again starts out with a slow, sultry lead that soon gives way to some last minute ravaging.

Heavy metal fans, especially those into thrash and speed metal, will find plenty to their liking on "The Third Attack." The album never lets up, maintaining its velocity throughout, and there isn't a disappointing track to be found.

Ravager: Marcel - guitars; Dario - guitars; Philip - vocals; Justus - bass; André - drums.
