PYREXIA

"Cruelty Beyond Submission" (Rex Records; 2004)

Reviewed by Snidermann

There were aspects of Pyrexia's "Cruelty Beyond Submission" that I really liked but, on the flip side, there were also aspects that were less than stellar.

"Cruelty Beyond Submission" is explosive, blistering death metal right from the opening note. If death metal is your kind of thing, then "Cruelty" will be to your liking instantly.

As death metal, of course, the monstrous vocals are too often just one dimensional and sometimes sound like nothing but a bunch of nonsensical screaming. Hey, sometimes it worked, but after a few cuts, it just seems to grind away at you.

Death metal fans will also like the incredibly graphic cover art.

Although I admire Pyrexia's intensity, I think the band needs to lighten up a bit. "Cruelty Beyond Submission" doesn't sound like the band's having any fun and - if that's the case - what's the point?

Killer. Not a classic but it will rock your world.

So-so. You've heard better.

Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.

Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
