PRISONER
"House of Cards" (Independent; 2024)

"House of Cards" is a three track EP from Canadian rockers Prisoner and it's a solid three slabs of serviceable heavy metal in a style that most reminds me of Metallica. I say "serviceable" because the music is a blend of classic thrash and metal that instantly draws you into it (especially if you're a fan of the genre) yet offers nothing new (which I'm okay with) or anything truly outstanding. My biggest problem with the EP is that the vocals are a little too clean for this type of music. Don't get me wrong, the lead vocalist has everything down almost perfectly: The phrasing, the high-end screams, the pitch. I just wish the vocals were meatier, a little more hardy. And I think this vocalist can do that and, perhaps, will do more of on the band's forthcoming full-length.
Bottom line is this: "House of Cards" did what an EP is supposed to do and that's whet my appetite for more music from Prisoner. I look forward to their forthcoming full-length album and to hearing what else than do with, say, 45 minutes of music than just over ten here.
