POISON THE WELL

"You Come Before You" (Atlantic)

I knew of Poison The Well but I can't say I'm familiar with them. This CD, their Atlantic Records debut, is filled with aggressive, busy music that rages with intensity, aggression and plenty of heart and soul. Add the band's undeniable attitude and you've got a flat-out winner.

The CD cover artwork is totally off kilter shit, with stems and sunflowers for peoples heads, just something else to like about this band as far as I'm concerned! Before I even heard one track, I knew there was something unique and a bit bizarre about Poison the Well.

I could not understand most of the lyrics as the band's lead vocalist is one of those guys with a gravelly scream. It works but was a little too extreme for me. Still, that's a minor complaint. The music is speedy, aggressive rock'n'roll, augmented with strange sounds that sound like the score for a horror movie or something.

All in all, "You Came Before You" works for me.

The band is Chris drums, Derek guitar, Geoff Vegas bass, Jeffrey vocals, Ryan guitar.
