OXYGEN DESTROYER

"Sinister Monstrosities Spawned by the Unfathomable Ignorance of Humankind" (Redefining Darkness Records; 2021)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

The Oxygen Destroyer, of course, for those of us with the kaiju knowledge, is the device used to destroy Godzilla in the original 1954 film. So forgive me if I expected Oxygen Destroyer and their lengthily named "Sinister Monstrosities Spawned by the Unfathomable Ignorance of Humankind" to be slow, stomping stoner rock instead of the death metal/thrash mash-up that is found here.

"Sinister Monstrosities ..." (I'm not typing that whole title again) is a furious, chaotic and delicious mess from beginning to end. With it's growling, death metal vocals, race-with-the-devil pacing and guitars that could cut your skin, it's a wild listen, the kind of which will have your mind spinning like a whirlpool for hours after you've endured its brief 29-minute running time. The thing is that, despite all the ferocity raging throughout these eight tracks, you don't want it to stop. It sweeps you up and pulls you in and, when the last note of final track "Their Reign Has Begun" has faded away (complete with its sampled giant monster roars) you'll feel drained and dizzy ... but ready to hit that replay button and ride it all again.

Wild, chaotic and furious, "Sinister Monstrosities ..." (I told you I'm not going to type that entire title again) kicks your ass hard and leaves you want more.
