ONE WAY RIDE

"Straight Up!" (MCA; 2000)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

Hailing from Long Beach, CA, One Way Ride offer up some riff-friendly rock with "Straight Up!" It's no big deal to sound like STP or Creed but it takes real talent to take those riffs and slam them against the wall with a singer who brings guts into each song. One Way Ride bring a tough sound that makes the ears perk up and listen and the lyrics to make the listener 'think. This is intelligent rock'n'roll.

Because this disc is more solid than other post-grunge releases I can heartily recommend it. Lead singer Leldon has the gruff voice but he can deliver sentiment as well. The drums bring a powerful rhythm and are tight with the rest of the band.

"Straight Up!" comes on strong but brings along melody making for a well-rounded release. There are number of acoustic tracks here but they still bring the edge (although I do wish they could have punched a little heavier on the bag).

An inside quote on the liner notes reads, "For every thought and emotion, there is a musical feeling that's equal." One can truly believe that while listening to "Straight Up!"

The best songs on the CD are "Pot Of Gold," "La-Ti-Da," and "Litefoot."

One Way Ride: Leldon - vocals, guitar; Chris Scott - guitar; Timmy Lunsford - bass; Brian Carhart - drums.
