"Rise Above" (Independent; 2023)

Reviewed by Snidermann

There is something compelling to me when a band has simple names or just letters in their name, just to make it cool. Well, NZM from South Florida is just such a band; awesome musicians, quality music and songwriting that sounds like they have been doing it for decades (and they have been since 2010).

The name of this recording is "Rise Above" and, from the very beginning, it was nothing short of brilliant. When listening to an album, I try to guess which bands may have had an influence on their particular style. For NZM, that's kinda easy: There is a strong AC/DC, Judas Priest and Dio feel and others I have yet to fathom. However, what I do know is NZM has taken influences from just about every rock/metal band out there and made it their own and, frankly, that is what is supposed to happen, right?

Screaming vocals that just about go overboard (but, thankfully, never do), guitars (both lead and bass) that kick ass throughout, thundering drums and, last, but not least, killer fucking keyboards that sound like it came right out of a philharmonic orchestra. There is a part of this music that plays a full-on harpsichord-sounding keyboard that not only sounds fantastic but fits right in.

I think NZM has their own style of music, despite their influences. Trying to categorize that, however, is way above my pay grade.

This band has it all and frankly I can't wait to experience more of this very talented band.

So-so. You've heard better.

Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.

Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
