NINJAWITCH
"Order of the Red Horse" (Independent; 2024)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
Sometimes, a band name doesn't tell you anything about the band. In the case of Ninjawitch, I confess that the name was cool enough to draw my attention but I didn't know if they were a black metal band, a stoner band, or metalcore. The album cover helped a little, with its spacy background and glorious colors, but it wasn't until I started this three track EP that I knew for sure. There are too many fucking labels in rock'n'roll these days, but Ninjawitch would fall comfortably in the cosmic/doom/stoner categories.
The three tracks on "Order of the Red Horse" are slow, fuzzy rockers, heavy as hell, with some spacy, echoing vocals and a crushing rhythm section. It's hard to tell much about a band and their music with only three tracks, but I can tell you the tracks on this EP are consistent, thematic and atmospheric. If you listen to the nearly twenty minutes of this EP wearing headphones in the dark, I promise it will take you places. I mean, isn't that the purpose of stoner music in the first place?
The three tracks here may not be as epic as some of the better-known stoner/doom bands out there, but they're still big enough to generate that wall-of-doom atmosphere that's a requirement for this sound. And, at times, it seemed the production was a little murky in places although I realize that is sometimes the case in this genre. Again, I would like to hear more from the band before proclaiming them the next big thing or just another flash in the pan. But there's enough solid rock'n'roll on "Order of the Red Horse" to have me looking forward to the band's future work and, hey, isn't that the purpose of EPs in the first place?
