THE NAIL

"The Nail" (Frontiers New Recordings; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

The Nail's self-titled debut is a crisp, clear 11-track slab of rock'n'roll, complete with exquisite guitar and a tight rhythm section, and the impressive vocals of on-the-rise vocalist Girish Pradhan. The music is modern hard rock—sometimes heavier than others—and it will easily hold your attention throughout its 52-minute runtime.

What makes The Nail interesting is that many of the songs sound vaguely familiar, not as though you've heard them before but because of their construction and their style. At the same time, however, it's hard to put a finger on where you've hard that sound. Trying to come up with who The Nail sounds like is more difficult than one might think.

Regardless, there's a ton of talent here, from the aforementioned Pradhan (who really shines on tracks like the eerie "Exorcist") to the young musicians who join him (one of whom was only 17 at the time of this recording). I wasn't sure what I thought of this album the first time through—strangely, it didn't really capture my attention. Subsequent listenings, however, have cemented some of the songs in my head and, again, the sharp production really brings out the sound quality.

For those of you looking for something a little different ... but sometimes just the same ... The Nail is definitely worth a try.
