MUTANT BLAST

"Soulsteeler" (Rockshots Records; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Mutant Blast's debut pays tribute to heavy metal and thrash from the good ol' days with their album, "Soulsteeler." It's a solid nine tracks of locomotive guitars, crushing percussion and song-perfect vocals. However, I've got to admit that nothing really reached out and grabbed me by the throat. I mean, there isn't a track here I didn't enjoy, but none of them really stuck with me, either (although I did really like the cover of Iron Maiden's "Prowler," which closes out the album).

Don't get me wrong: "Soulsteeler" does what it's set out to do and that's deliver an old-school thrash/metal listening experience. I just don't know how often I'll re-visit it as time goes on. That being said, I'm looking forward to what the band does next as well.
